1. Annie Louise Wilkerson MD Nature Preserve

Raleigh’s first official nature preserve is Annie Louise Wilkerson MD Nature Preserve. Located by the Falls Lake State Recreation Area’s southern shores. Spread over a 157-acre outdoor space which was opened in 2006. Dr. Annie Louise Wilkerson was a respected doctor in Raleigh with a long medical career. She donated the land to encourage nature and wildlife education.

The park has an office, an education centre, and areas for kids to do crafts. They also offer programs like bird watching, stargazing nights, and art classes for everyone. The preserve has open fields and two miles of walking trails that go through meadows. An oak-hickory forest, a small farm pond, and rocky areas. It’s great for families who want to explore.

For those seeking more adventure, North Carolina’s long hiking trail starts from Wilkerson Nature Preserve. Starting from the north of the nature preserve hikers can follow the white dot markers on trees to reach the MST.

2. Durant Nature Preserve

North Raleigh Durant Nature Preserve spans 237 acres boasting five miles of serene hiking trails. However, these hiking trails are primarily unpaved and see fewer visitors. While the terrain isn’t particularly challenging, it’s one of the best places for tranquil outdoor exploration.

Families with dogs and kids will find it welcoming and some parts of the trails even accommodate mountain bikes. Additionally, the park provides various amenities such as a fishing pier, playground, sand volleyball court, bird & butterfly gardens, picnic spots, and more fun activities.

3. Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve

Nestled in Cary, Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is a 140-acre park. Opened four decades ago and was named after its unique group of nearly 200 Eastern Hemlock trees. Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is nearly three miles of well-maintained walking and hiking trails.

The Chestnut Oak Loop trail covers 1.2 miles on the park’s hilly but manageable side. Along with the stunning views you’ll also find benches on the way. The Swift Creek Loop Trail which spans a short 0.8 miles consists of wooden boardwalks. Visitors with limited mobility can reach an overlook on the Swift Creek Loop Trail.

The 3,700-square-foot Stevens Nature Center which is currently closed. Features interactive educational nature and historical exhibits from North Carolina’s Piedmont region.

4. Turnipseed Nature Preserve

Turnipseed Nature Preserve of 265 acres was established in 2017 and is located just south of Wendell. The Turnipseed Nature Preserve derives its name from the road that borders its southern side. A popular serene retreat for hiking and exploring nature. Turnipseed Nature Preserve offers a variety of amenities such as picnic tables and open spaces for play.

You will find three miles of ADA-accessible hiking trails that provide access to meadows and forests. They were once used for tobacco and soybean farming. While exploring you should keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife. Turnipseed is home to beavers, red-shouldered hawks, wood ducks, salamanders, and many other friendly creatures.

5. Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve

Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve is located in northeastern Wake County. A unique piece of land carved by the winding Neuse River. Once the home of Dr. Bill and Merrie Hedrick who wanted to preserve the land. Reached an agreement with the City of Raleigh in 1994 to create a public park.

Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve is primarily made up of undeveloped grassland and wooded areas. Featured two natural trails covering approximately 1.5 miles. Make a note that these trials are for pedestrians only. Pets are also welcome but to be on leashes.

Horseshoe Farm also provides amenities like a parking lot, a shaded picnic area, and restroom facilities. The preserve offers some of the most scenic views in the area.
